Sharing as I learn and grow

I am a Christian woman with a passion for educating elementary age children in individualized and interactive ways. I find joy and purpose in helping children have meaningful educational experiences that extend beyond the traditional classroom and invite parental engagement. I am also passionate about advocating for children who do not learn in traditional educational environments.

I have been married to the love of my life for the past 18 years and am a stay-at-home mom to our two amazing children, ages 14 and 11. Being a stay-at-home mom is not an easy journey but it is certainly a fulfilling one.

I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications Media from Bowie State University (Bowie, MD) in 1999. I am the co-founder of the Mountain View Elementary School (Haymarket, VA) Global Studies Program which I started with my mother-in-love in 2015. The program gives students the opportunity to learn about a variety of cultures in a fun and engaging way. I am also the co-founder of Mountain View Elementary School’s African American Achievement Celebration, an annual celebration that recognizes and celebrates the achievements and contributions of African Americans locally, nationally and globally.

In 2019, I published my first children’s book, “Meet Kaliyah.” This book is deeply personal as it is based on my real life family. When my children were younger it was difficult to find books that reflected the everyday experiences of children who look like them. I worked to fill that gap by writing my own books. “Meet Kaliyah” is available by contacting me or on www.amazon.com. I have also written articles for and contributed to two local publications, The Bull Run Observer and Bull Run Mountain Neighbors.

In August 2020, I began the Facebook Group, The Learning Place. It is a safe and interactive network of parents and educators from all over the United States engaging in meaningful dialogue about how to best educate children. I also host a weekly mentoring workshop for tweens and teens ages 11-18 to help them develop into godly young women.

While I enjoy my present opportunities, it is my long-term goal to write more children’s books and build a learning center that services the whole child by providing individualized learning opportunities. My hobbies include writing, shopping, decorating, organizing and traveling with my family. I make my home in northern Virginia with my family and our dog, Louie.
